A 1930 Chrysler Imperial “8” is a rare find at a car show and it is said you are fortunate to see one at all.

History:

Following World War I younger buyers wanted a fresh approach to automotive design. The automobile industry had been built on the production and sale of stock model cars. This was true even of the luxury class makers. The only way the wealthy could acquire distinction in the cars they owned and drove was to buy a chassis and have a body made to order. 

This created a demand for luxury cars and custom bodies. The custom bodies built by the old established companies were as formal and somber in their designs as were the older clients who bought them. But the younger buyers wanted more fleet and graceful lines, a suggestion of power and motion. The demand was for car bodies to be styled and not merely engineered to a set of formal shapes.

The Coachbuilt Chrysler Imperial “8”

1930 was a year of great challenges for the country and the automobile industry. Chrysler introduced the Imperial 8 in July to compete for high-end luxury clients. Chrysler supplied this chassis without bodies to design studios and custom coachbuilders of the day.

The design studios began to build bodies on the Imperial chassis for clients and as prototypes. This resulted in unique automobiles with appealing lines because the focus was on style and keeping an overall uncluttered look. Design characteristics combined the sweeping hood, Split V-type radiator with winged Viking Gazelle Radiator Cap, extra-long single doors on each side, rear hinged "suicide" doors, unusual roof treatments (with extended blind rear quarters) and an external metal trunk. The Dual Side Mounted Spare Tires with canvas covers and accessory pedestal mirrors were used to accentuate the clean, smooth body lines.

Our 1930 Imperial was born at the nexus of major upheaval and changes from the 1929 Imperial L to the 1931 Imperial “8” GC.  The actual history of our 1930 limousine is not yet clear. We do know that in 1930 the Le Baron design studio was building three Town Car limousines based on the Chrysler Imperial Eight with a 136 inch wheelbase.

Our 1930 Chrysler Imperial Eight appears to feature many of the design characteristics of the LeBaron Design Studio effort but design records are lost and unavailable and thus the exact lineage remains unclear. It is very obvious that each of these rare cars are very special and it is indeed fortunate we are able to offer this vintage Chrysler Imperial Eight Limousine as a service vehicle for clients to personally experience.
